My Big Switch: From Nespresso to a Real Espresso Machine (Plus My Coffee Nook Must-Haves and Splurges)

I finally did it, I made the big switch and invested in a real espresso machine. And let me just say, I couldn’t be happier! For years, I was a loyal Nespresso girlie. I loved the convenience and sleek design of the Nespresso Vertuo, but I always had two big complaints:

  1. Single-use pods – I hated the waste I was producing (especially as a 4–6 cups-a-day household).
  2. The cost – Pods run about $1.25 each, which really adds up when you’re drinking multiple coffees a day.

So while the Nespresso was a more affordable up-front purchase (we bought our Vertuo Pop for $149), the monthly pod costs ended up being more than what I now spend with my espresso machine setup.

Why I Left Nespresso Behind

When I first bought my Nespresso machine back in 2019, it felt like a major upgrade from a drip coffee pot. And honestly, if you only drink one cup a day or enjoy coffee here and there, it’s perfect. But my husband and I drink a combined 4–6 cups daily. That’s a lot of pods, a lot of waste, and a lot of money going down the drain.

I knew early on that Nespresso wasn’t going to be my forever machine. But at the time, I wasn’t ready to invest $600–$800 in a high-quality espresso machine. I also didn’t want to grab a budget machine that would burn out under our heavy use.

The Espresso Machine Hunt

After plenty of research (and coffee chats with friends), I had it narrowed down to two machines:

  • Breville Barista Express – Retails at $749, sleek stainless steel design, incredible reviews. I’ve heard it goes on sale once or twice a year (Black Friday being the big one).
  • GE Café Espresso Machine – Retails at $579, but I’ve seen it as low as $349. Comes in white, black, and silver, with chic rose gold accents. Friends who own it rave about how user-friendly it is.

An honorable mention I discovered later is the KitchenAid Espresso Machine ($550, available in four colors — the Juniper shade is stunning).

And then… my stars aligned.

My Espresso Machine Steal of a Deal

This year, right around tax return season, I spotted the Silver GE Café Espresso Machine on sale for only $249. Yes, you read that right. $249! I still can’t believe it.

I was originally planning to splurge for Mother’s Day, but when that deal popped up in February, I didn’t even hesitate. Best. Decision. Ever.

She is BEAUTIFUL. I will never get over my little coffee nook setup now.

Coffee Nook Must-Haves

Once I brought home my espresso machine, I had to stock up on all the accessories that make at-home lattes and cappuccinos not only easy but also fun. Here are my tried-and-true must-haves:

  • Knock Box – A game-changer. No more running to the trash with every espresso puck.
  • Espresso Cups – Essential for both hot lattes and iced drinks.
  • Iced Latte Cups – I grabbed a multipack that I use daily.
  • Microfiber Cloths – Perfect for wiping down the steamer wand, and they hang neatly within reach.
  • Stir Spoons – I picked rose gold to match my machine, but you can go with stainless or glass.
  • Pretty Jars – I use antique sunflower glass jars for storing beans and brown sugar. They double as cute décor!
  • Electric Whisk – Great for blending collagen or whipping up cold foam.

My Coffee Bar Splurges

I couldn’t resist adding some pretty extras that make my coffee nook feel special:

  • Icon/Charm Glasses – The cutest seasonal and everyday glasses. I even found dupe versions that are just as good. Target Dupes.
  • Glass Cups with Lids – Perfect for iced lattes on the go. (Pro tip: skip bamboo lids, they mold easily.)
  • Syrup Jars – I don’t use syrups, but they add a charming touch to any setup.
  • Acrylic Stand for Cups – Not necessary, but a super cute way to display your seasonal glassware.

Coffee at Home: Tips for the Best Cup

The biggest money-saver of this whole switch has been learning how to make coffee-shop-quality lattes at home. Here are my best tips:

  • Invest in good beans – Skip oily, flavored beans. I buy either local roastery beans or the Kirkland brand from Costco.
  • Stock fun flavors and milks – Yes, they feel pricey at first, but they’ll last months and save you trips to Starbucks.
  • Grab on-the-go cups – My coffee runs used to happen only when I was heading out. Now, I have reusable glass cups for the car (and a stash of disposable ones just in case).

Final Thoughts: Treat Yourself

Honestly, this espresso machine feels like the gift that keeps on giving. Whether it’s for Mother’s Day, a birthday, an anniversary, or just because, this is such a worthwhile investment.

The GE Café Espresso Machine has been so user-friendly, stylish, and reliable. I’ll be sharing a full review once I’ve been using it longer, but for now, I can say this: I have zero regrets.

So if you’ve been debating the switch from Nespresso to a true espresso machine… this is your sign. Treat yourself, because you deserve it.

xx,
Ciara
