If you’re looking for a toddler activity that’s exciting, hands-on, and holds attention longer than 10 minutes, then this fizzy dinosaur egg activity is a must-try. It combines the magic of science (baking soda and vinegar reaction) with sensory play and the fun of surprise of dinosaurs (or whatever small toy you have). And yes, it kept my toddler busy for over an hour. Easily.
Why I Started Doing Toddler Activities
I started setting up toddler activities when my oldest turned 2, right after we welcomed our second baby. Those first few months of adjusting to two kids were tough, and activities gave my toddler something that felt special and “just for her” during the baby’s nap time. I truly believe that helped with our transition and if you’re in that same season, I see you.
Another reason? Sometimes, you just need a minute. A minute to breathe, drink your coffee, or simply not be running across the room for the hundredth time. That’s where activities like this one come in handy.
Why Fizzy Dinosaur Eggs Are Worth It
I’ll be honest, this activity takes a little more setup than my typical toddler activity. But it’s so worth it. Most activities I set up last around 20–30 minutes before the creativity spirals into chaos (still a blissful 30 minutes). But with this one? My toddler stayed focused, engaged, and excited the entire time, and it was over an hour.
Plus, it’s a built-in science experiment, a sensory activity, and a dinosaur-themed playtime all in one.
We made six fizzy eggs, and they entertained my 2-year-old for over an hour! If you’re dealing with toddler boredom or need a rainy day win, this is it.
Safety Note: This activity is not taste-safe. You’ll want to supervise closely and make sure little ones aren’t trying to sample the eggs.
What You’ll Need
Here’s everything we used to make our dinosaur fizzing eggs. Most of these are items you might already have in your kitchen or play area:
- Dinosaur figurines (but any small toys work!)
- Baking soda (we buy the bulk bag for crafts and activities)
- White vinegar
- Water
- Food coloring (we use dye-free drops)
- Pipettes (so fun for fine motor skills)
- Cake pan (trust me, this helps catch the mess)
How to Make Fizzy Dinosaur Eggs
- Mix the color: In a bowl, combine a few drops of food coloring with a small amount of water.
- Add baking soda: Slowly stir in baking soda until you get a wet sand-like texture. You want it to be moldable and hold its shape.
- Form the eggs: Take a small toy dinosaur, place it in your hand, and mold the baking soda mixture around it to form an “egg.”
- Chill (optional): You can use the eggs right away or freeze them for a bit. Freezing makes them last longer when your child starts adding vinegar, which is a win if your toddler loves the fizz!
- Set up the play area: Place the eggs in a cake pan or sensory bin. Fill a cup with vinegar and give your toddler a pipette to start the fizzy fun.
- Let them discover: Your toddler will love watching the eggs bubble and fizz as they “hatch” the hidden dinosaur inside.
Pro Tip: If your toddler gets impatient, you can also give them a spoon or small cup to pour the vinegar for bigger reactions.
What They Learn from This Activity
This might look like just fun and fizz, but there’s so much learning happening:
- Cause and effect: They’ll see how vinegar reacts with baking soda.
- Fine motor practice: Using pipettes helps develop finger strength and control.
- Sensory exploration: The textures, sounds, and even slight scents create a full sensory experience.
- Problem solving: Figuring out how to “hatch” the egg adds an element of critical thinking.
