Easy Turkey Craft for Toddlers — Perfect for Fall Break or a Rainy Day

If you’re looking for a super simple, low-prep activity to do with your toddler over fall break or on a rainy afternoon, this cardboard turkey craft is perfect. It’s fun, festive, and gives your little one a chance to practice creativity, fine motor skills, and color recognition, all while keeping them happily entertained for a while.

We used paints for our turkey craft, but if you’re not feeling like dealing with brushes and rinsing cups today, markers or crayons work beautifully too. The goal here isn’t perfection — it’s fun. Even if your turkey looks a little “wonky” (mine sure did), your toddler will still be thrilled with their masterpiece.

What You’ll Need:

  • Cardboard (repurpose a box!)
  • Blue Painter’s Tape
  • Glue (stick glue or school glue)
  • Construction Paper (white, black, orange)
  • Paint (washable toddler-safe paints work best)
  • Scissors

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Create the Turkey Face
    • Cut a piece of cardboard into a large rectangle or square.
    • Use blue painter’s tape to create a half circle at the top center, this will be the turkey’s face.
  2. Add the Eyes and Beak
    • Cut out two white ovals for eyes and two small black circles for pupils.
    • Cut a small orange triangle for the beak.
    • Glue the eyes and beak inside the taped-off half circle. Allow them to dry before painting.
  3. Tape Out the Feathers
    • From the edge of the turkey’s face, make 6–10 lines radiating outward using blue tape.
    • Connect these lines with shorter strips of tape to create feather shapes. (If you’re a visual person, check the picture of our taped turkey above for reference.)
  4. Let the Painting Begin
    • Set your toddler up with paints and brushes. Encourage them to paint each feather a different color or mix colors for a fun tie-dye effect.
    • If you’re avoiding paint, hand them markers or crayons and let them fill in each feather section.
  5. Dry and Reveal
    • Let the paint dry completely.
    • Carefully peel off the painter’s tape to reveal crisp feather outlines. Some pieces may stick a bit, so peel slowly to avoid tearing the cardboard.
  6. Display Your Turkey
    • Prop it up on a shelf, hang it on the fridge, or use it as part of your Thanksgiving décor. Your toddler will be so proud to show off their work!

Why I Love This Activity

As much as I love doing activities for the skill-building benefits, fine motor development, color recognition, hand-eye coordination, I also love the peace and quiet it brings me for a few minutes. Yes, painting can feel overwhelming at first, but the more you let your toddler explore it, the more confident (and less messy) they become.

Whether you go all in with paint, stick to markers, or simply pin this for later, I hope you know you’re doing a great job. And if you want more simple, low-prep holiday activities like this one, check out these 4 Thanksgiving Toddler Activities and the upcoming 25 Activities for Christmas!
