Winter is here, and indoor play is our reality most days. Even though my social feeds are full of dreamy playrooms and huge basements, I know many of us (myself included) don’t have that kind of space right now. That doesn’t mean we can’t create fun, movement-filled play for our toddlers.
Last year, I shared about one of our absolute favorite finds, the Busy Beams, and now, a full year later, I can confidently say we’re still pulling them out at least once a week. Some weeks it’s daily. They’ve become one of our go-to winter boredom busters because they’re compact, versatile, and burn plenty of energy, all without needing a giant playroom.
We actually have both versions, one with stepping stones and one without. We keep one upstairs and one downstairs and the kids are always taking them out to play.

Why We Love the Busy Beams
We have a small townhome for our family of four (soon to be five!), so space is a rare commodity. The Busy Beams completely stack into each other for storage, and you can use them two ways:
- Balance beam mode for walking, balancing, and coordination
- Stepping stone mode for jumping, stretching, and creative play
We’ve used them indoors during snowy days and outdoors in the fall. No matter where we set them up, they always spark movement and imagination.
Update for this year
B. Toys just came out with a brand new set, and it’s such a fun upgrade. Musical Balance Beams + Stones. The new version has a musical stone with three interactive games — music for free dancing, a freeze mode where the music stops, and a “hop to a colored stone” challenge. The beams themselves are now curved and textured, which adds an extra balance challenge (perfect for older toddlers), and the stepping stones are slightly slanted for even more variety. Best of all, everything still stacks neatly together for easy storage. It’s such a great refresh on a toy we already love, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it sells out this holiday season.

4 Fun Indoor Games to Play with Busy Beams
1. Balance Beam
Classic and fun. Set them up in a straight line or zig-zag for your toddler to walk across.
2. Stepping Stones
Use the middle connectors as individual stepping stones to hop between.
3. Jumping Ladders
Place beams on the ground, unconnected and parallel, like ladder rungs. Have your kids jump over each one!
4. The Floor is Lava
Connect some beams and stones but leave gaps. Challenge your kids to stretch or jump across without touching the “lava.”
Why They’re Perfect for Small Spaces

Not only do these store in a tiny footprint, but they’re quick to set up and take down. When you’re done, they slide into a closet, under a bed, or in the corner of a room.
And if you’re looking for a gift idea for a toddler or preschooler this Christmas — this is one they’ll use over and over. I also have a list of other small-space-friendly toys we love, plus our favorite easy-store water table here.
Small Space Parents — You’re Not Alone
If you’ve ever felt discouraged seeing big indoor play setups online, I promise you can create the same fun without all that square footage. A few well-chosen, multi-use toys (like the Busy Beams) can bring hours of movement and joy — even in a small living room.
I hope these ideas bring as much joy (and a little bit of calm) to your holiday season as they do to ours. If you’re here, you probably have little ones at home, so remember, these activities don’t have to be perfect to be magical. Even the simplest setups can spark big smiles and sweet memories.
