I Had No Idea How Much a Shower Filter Would Change My Skin
Before trying a filtered shower head, I honestly didn’t understand what the hype was about. But after testing one in our home, I replaced every shower head and added a bath filter too.
They were super easy to install, and I noticed a difference almost immediately. But I didn’t want to rely only on how my skin felt (maybe just a placebo?), so I grabbed an inexpensive chlorine test off Amazon to measure the before-and-after results.
In this post, I’ll share:
- What filtered water has done for my skin (and my son’s eczema)
- The exact products I use from Canopy
- How the chlorine test results turned out
- Why this is one of my favorite low-tox swaps
How I First Found Canopy
I originally tried Canopy’s Humidifier for my kids’ room because it’s dishwasher safe (top rack only). Every other humidifier I owned turned gross and moldy, but 6+ months later, our Canopy humidifier is still squeaky clean.

That kicked off my curiosity about the rest of their line, especially the filtered shower heads and bath filters, and I’m so glad I gave them a try.
Why I Needed a Shower + Bath Filter
We live in Utah where the water is hard and full of chlorine. I could feel it drying my skin out every time I showered. I even ran a chlorine test (this one from Amazon is under $10) to be sure, and wow—every faucet turned the test water bright yellow.
We rent, so a whole-house water softening system wasn’t an option (and I’m not sold on them anyway). A shower filter was the perfect middle ground: affordable, non-permanent, and surprisingly effective.
First Impressions: Fixed Shower Head
I started with the Fixed Shower Head in Matte Black (gorgeous, by the way). It was incredibly easy to install, and when it’s time to replace the filter, you don’t even have to take the head off.

Even before I re-tested the water, I could feel the difference. My skin was no longer tight or dry after showering. And my rosacea? Not nearly as flared after hot showers. I genuinely looked glowy after just one use.

Bath Filter Results for My Toddler
Once I tried the bath filter, it was an immediate yes for our toddler. My son has dry, sensitive skin with frequent eczema patches. I’ve always used good lotions and ointments after his baths, but now I can tell the water itself was part of the problem.

The bath filter made a big difference, and I noticed fewer flare-ups once we started using it consistently. And two months later they’ve completely gone.
Real Test Results: Chlorine Before & After
I wanted to be sure the filters were actually doing their job, so I ran the same chlorine test again after installing both the shower head and bath filter.
Before: Bright yellow = high chlorine
After: Clear = no chlorine detected

I couldn’t believe how big the difference was—and I was already feeling the results before seeing them. That sealed the deal for me.
Next Upgrade: Handheld Shower Head
After loving the fixed version, I got the Handheld Shower Head for my main shower and moved the fixed one to our guest bath. It comes with everything you need: hose, mount, and even a scalp massage attachment (a personal favorite).

The water pressure is amazing, the filter is just as effective, and the install was quick. I’m obsessed.
Did you know?
The Canopy Bath Filter + Showerhead are also HSA/FSA eligible, which means you can use pre-tax health funds instead of paying out of pocket. Since it’s a skin-supporting product (especially for skin sensitivities, eczema, or dry winter skin), it qualifies as a health-related purchase. Just keep your receipt or order confirmation in case your provider needs it
How to check out with your HSA/FSA funds:
- Add the bath filter (and any other eligible items) to your cart
Be sure everything is set to “one-time”—HSA/FSA cards can’t be used on subscription purchases right now. - Check for Shop Pay
Make sure you’re not signed into Shop Pay and avoid any accelerated checkout options like Shop Pay, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. - Select Truemed at checkout
Choose TrueMed as your payment option when you’re ready to check out. - Complete payment
If you use your HSA/FSA card, you’re done! If you pay with a personal card, TrueMed will send you reimbursement instructions.
Why This Low-Tox Swap Is Worth It
If you’re trying to reduce toxins in your home, this is a simple, affordable place to start. No major plumbing, no house-wide system, just easy upgrades that make a real impact.
The filters last about 3 months, and Canopy offers a subscription so you never have to remember to reorder. Personally, I just keep a few extras around the house! But, they are well designed for easy replacement.
