DIY Holiday Patch Sweatshirt for Toddler

These patch sweatshirts are so cute and so easy to make yourself! They would make great fun for a party or just to create a personalized sweatshirt your little one will love. **This post may contain affiliate links. A small commission may be earned.**

The other day I was shopping and saw the cutest sweatshirt for my toddler – it had the patches on it that said MERRY, but of course they were out of her size. It got me thinking how easy it would be to make the sweatshirt myself and be able to personalize it for my toddler!

Initially I did check for the patches in person to be able to make the sweatshirt that day, but when I went to Hobby Lobby they were out of stock and it was so chaotic. So instead I went with trusty Amazon instead to find the different patches. For my toddler’s size I knew the traditional 3 inch letters you usually find would be too big. The 3 inch letters would be great for an older kid or adult sized sweatshirt.

The 2 inch letters turned out so cute and are the perfect size for a toddler sweatshirt so I would definitely recommend that route. I wanted to go with these cute Pink Christmas patches addition to my toddler’s sweatshirt – she wanted the Santa. Here’s how her final sweatshirt came out!

I know a lot of DIY’s say they are easy, but I promise you this one is. The best part is you can use these patches on any fabric really and you don’t even have to buy a new shirt or sweatshirt, you can totally use one you already have or a thrifted one. This project only took me 15 minutes once I organized the letters and my toddler decided what she wanted her sweatshirt to say: “JOLLY” and of course it had to have Santa!

What you need:
Sweatshirt (we went with this $5 black sweatshirt)
2 inch iron on letters (they have tons of colors, 3 inch iron on letters for adult sizes)
Pink Christmas Patches
– Iron (I used my mini Cricut iron)

  1. Decide on The iron on letters I linked are adhesive so you can stick them on first and make sure you like the placement before ironing.
  2. Iron each letter thoroughly – I move my iron around hit each letter for at least 20 seconds.
  3. Check for any spots or corners that aren’t fully ironed on and make sure to hit them with the iron again – if you want the patches to hold up for a long time, be extra diligent on this step!
  4. Once patches are ironed on and cooled, comb up your letters – this will help the fuzzy look come back (it probably looks flat after ironing).

Ideas for Christmas words:
MERRY
JOLLY
JOY
PEACE
HOHOHO
FALALALA
GRINCH

I think this design is cute and can be done for any holiday or just for everyday wear of a sweatshirt. I think we’ll make one for Valentine’s Day next with these cute little heart patches too. You can decorate backpacks, sweatshirts, travel bags, you name it. It definitely makes them a little more personalized and fun for you and your toddler! Have fun, xx Ciara.
