Have you seen the colorful scratch-off “magic paper” before? You use a stick to scratch away the top layer and reveal a surprise rainbow of color underneath.

What you might not know is just how easy it is to make your own magic paper at home, and your toddler can help with every step!

Why We Love This DIY

I vividly remember making this kind of scratch paper as a kid and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. I was a huge arts-and-crafts girl back then and now I love recreating the magic with my own toddlers.

This activity is simple to prep and can be done in two parts: coloring one day, painting and scratching the next. My favorite tip? Make a batch of scratch papers all at once so you always have some ready to go on a rainy day. Make sure you labels the backs so you know what’s hidden (or don’t!).

What You Need:

  • Cardstock
  • Crayons (We always use Crayola for the best results)
  • Matte black acrylic paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Popsicle sticks or wooden cuticle sticks (These are our favorite for scratching, but supervise little ones closely if using sharp ends)
  • Butcher paper or cardboard (to protect your table while painting)

How to Make Magic Scratch Paper

1. Color your base layer
Have your toddler color all over the cardstock using thick, solid layers of crayon. You don’t want to leave any white spots behind, the waxy coating is what makes the scratching work!

You can do rainbow colors, seasonal themes, or just random scribbles. For our Halloween version, we love using orange and purple.

Mom tip: If you’re making multiple sheets at once, label the backs with the color scheme or theme. It’ll save you a guessing game later!

2. Paint it black
Lay out some butcher paper or a cardboard surface, and paint a thin layer of black matte acrylic paint over the entire crayon-covered sheet. Be sure it’s fully coated!

Pro tip: Matte paint works better than glossy, it scratches off more cleanly.

3. Let it dry
Give your sheets plenty of time to dry. Overnight is best. If the paint is even slightly damp, it won’t scratch properly.

Easy DIY magic paper at home. You just need a few supplies and you'll be creating your own paper in no time!

4. Scratch and reveal!
Once the paper is dry, hand your toddler a popsicle stick or cuticle stick and let them scratch away to reveal the bright colors underneath. The excitement on their face is the best part.

Why You’ll Love It

  • Great for fine motor skills
  • Totally customizable with seasonal themes
  • Budget-friendly and easy to prep in batches
  • Can be used for quiet time, waiting rooms, or travel

And if you’re just not feeling crafty today, you can always buy premade scratch art paper here—but trust me, making it yourself adds so much extra fun (and saves a few dollars too!).
