Hidden Christmas Pictures – A Fun Winter Craft for Toddlers and Kids

If you’re looking for a magical, low-prep Christmas craft that your toddler will be so proud of, this Hidden Christmas Pictures activity is perfect. Kids love the big reveal when the design “magically” appears and you’ll love that it’s simple to set up whether you use a Cricut or just household supplies.

This is a great activity for all ages, but it’s especially fun for toddlers. You can go for a traditional paintbrush version with older kids or make it completely mess-free for little ones.

I recently challenged myself to use my Cricut more because what’s the point of having it if it just sits there? If you’re in the same boat, make sure you’re following along for more easy Cricut projects designed for toddler moms. I personally use both the Cricut Maker 3 and the Cricut Joy Xtra. The Maker 3 is great when you’re using various materials, while the Joy Xtra is my lightweight go-to for quick vinyl, iron-on, or paper cuts.

Supplies You’ll Need

  • CanvasThese canvases work for both the paintbrush and mess-free version and fit perfectly into a gallon bag.
  • PaintHere’s the set we used.
  • Vinyl cut-out (if using Cricut) or painter’s tape / Elmer’s glue.
  • Paintbrushes & palettes (paintbrush version only).
  • Gallon baggie (mess-free version only).

Cricut Version – Step-by-Step

  1. Design your scene in Cricut Design Space. My toddlers chose ornaments and snowflakes, but you can do Christmas trees, gingerbread men, or even a snowy village.
  2. Cut your design using Cricut vinyl (we used permanent). Weed out the excess vinyl.
  3. Transfer your design to the canvas using transfer tape.
  4. Paint over the design with your toddler’s chosen colors. Cover the entire canvas for best results.
  5. Let it dry overnight so the paint fully sets.
  6. Peel off the vinyl to reveal the hidden design. Write your child’s name on the back to remember the year.

No Cricut? Try the Glue Method

  1. Sketch your scene directly onto the canvas with Elmer’s glue. Keep lines thick so they’re easy to peel later.
  2. Let the glue dry overnight.
  3. Paint over the glue design with your toddler’s chosen colors, covering the canvas completely.
  4. Dry overnight again.
  5. Peel off the glue to reveal the hidden scene.

Mess-Free Version for Younger Toddlers

Whether you’re using vinyl or glue, here’s how to make it mess-free:

  1. Create your design and let it dry if using glue.
  2. Add paint blobs directly on top of your design.
  3. Slip the canvas into a gallon baggie and zip shut with as little air as possible.
  4. Let your toddler smoosh the paint around until the canvas is fully covered.
  5. Remove from bag, dry overnight, and peel off the design.

Why You’ll Love This Craft

  • Easy to adapt for any age.
  • Fun sensory experience for toddlers.
  • Beautiful finished art you can display each Christmas.
  • Perfect for gifts: smaller canvases can be turned into homemade Christmas cards for family and friends.

My toddler beams with pride every time she shows her finished masterpiece. We display them with our Christmas décor each year, and they always spark sweet memories.
