When I was in the thick of newborn life with a 2 year old toddler, we would often resort to lots of baths. My toddler absolutely loved water and it would keep her entertained for longer periods of time. I hated how much screen time she would get as a 2 year old and I was always looking for ways to limit that screen time.

I finally started setting up easy activities that my toddler could do independently when she was about 2.5 years old. These activities started very simple and I tried to have little mess or take the mess outside – because the whole point for me was to make my day less stressful and have a little time to myself.

IT GETS BETTER.

I wish I knew then, but I can tell you now – the more activities you do with your toddler, they better they get at them. The less of a huge mess they make (they will still make a mess and some days will be worse than others, but they get better).

Ping Pong Scoop was an activity I set up because I know how much my toddler loves water and playing with the water. I knew this activity would keep her occupied for a long time and she would be working on some fine motor skills and coordination trying to scoop out the ping pong balls.

What you need:
– Tupperware container
– Cupcake Tins
Ping Pong Balls
– Scoop
– Water!

  1. Put your water and ping pong balls into the tupperware container
  2. Place your cupcake tins next to it
  3. Give your toddler the scoop and have them scoop the ping pong balls from the water and put them in the cupcake tin
If you want to add a color recognition element to this, you could put a color paper or sticker at the bottom of the cupcake tin to have your toddler match the ball to.

This keeps my toddler occupied for 20-30 minutes at least, even though its so simple. My toddler will often dump all the ping pong balls back into the tupperware and try again.

Don’t overcomplicate the activities – your toddler doesn’t need much to explore and entertain themselves! Check out more easy to set up activities. xx Ciara
