Looking for a fun, low-prep toddler activity that works just as well outside in the summer as it does inside on a rainy day? This pipe cleaner fishing activity has been a huge hit in our house! It takes only a few minutes to set up, uses supplies you probably already have, and keeps little ones entertained while building fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
I love activities like this because they cost next to nothing, can be used for both toddlers and preschoolers, and don’t require me to run out to buy a bunch of supplies. Win-win!
What You Need
- A large bowl or bin (we used a small storage tote)
- Pipe cleaners (the more colors the better!)
- Tongs (or kid-safe tweezers)
Optional: A cup, strainer, or even a DIY fishing rod made from a stick and string.

How to Set It Up
- Make your fish: Twist pipe cleaners into little fish shapes. Don’t worry if they aren’t perfect, toddlers will still “catch” them.
- Fill your bin: Add water to your bowl, tote, or storage container.
- Add the fish: Drop in your pipe cleaner fish and let them float around.
- Start fishing: Give your toddler tongs and let them “catch” the fish.
For younger toddlers, the tongs are the perfect challenge. For preschoolers, you can make it harder by asking them to grab only one fish at a time or to sort fish by color into matching cups.
Extra Learning Ideas
- Color recognition: Use different colored bowls or cups and have your child sort the fish as they catch them.
- Counting practice: Challenge your toddler to count how many fish they caught.
- Fine motor boost: Have them use a DIY fishing pole (pipe cleaner loop attached to a stick with yarn) for an extra challenge.
What Kids Are Learning
This simple fishing game isn’t just fun, it’s full of hidden learning opportunities!
- Fine motor skills: Using tongs strengthens little hand muscles, which are important for writing later on.
- Hand-eye coordination: Scooping and catching the fish helps improve coordination.
- Problem solving: Kids figure out how to grab tricky fish that slip away.
- Color recognition & sorting: Sorting fish by color reinforces early math skills.
- Counting & early math: Counting each fish caught makes learning numbers playful.
Why I Love This Activity
Creating toddler activities doesn’t have to be a whole long process that leaves you more exhausted than before the activity even begins. This one is quick to set up, budget-friendly, and keeps kids happily engaged.
