My Two (Now Three!) Must-Have Items Now That I Have a Potty Trained Toddler

Let me start by saying this is not a “how to potty train” post. I’m not here to tell you when, how, or what method to use — every child is different, and you know your toddler best. Instead, I’m sharing the items that have made life so much easier now that my toddler is potty trained.
If you’re in that “we made it through potty training, but now what?” stage, these are my go-to recommendations for keeping things smooth and stress-free.
1. Double Toilet Seat

When we first ditched the diapers, our bathroom setup was… well, a little chaotic. I didn’t love having a big plastic toddler potty seat sitting on top of our toilet (or worse, taking up floor space). Then I discovered the double toilet seat, and it was a total game changer.
- The toddler seat is built right into the main seat.
- It’s magnetic, so when not in use, it sticks neatly to the lid.
- My toddler can sit comfortably and securely without me worrying about balance or mess.
- No bulky seats to store, and no extra cleanup beyond the usual.
Honestly, it blends right into the bathroom and doesn’t scream “toddler potty training in progress,” which is a win for me.
2. Car/Travel Potty

If your family is on the go a lot like we are, this one is non-negotiable. Our foldable travel potty lives in my car, and it’s saved us more times than I can count.
- It folds down small enough to fit under a seat or in the trunk.
- We use disposable liners with built-in absorbent pads, which means no scrubbing out the potty afterward (bless).
- Perfect for long errands, playground trips, road trips, or those moments when the nearest public restroom is… not an option.
It takes up almost no space and eliminates the “what if we can’t find a bathroom?” panic.
3. Portable Urinal for Boys (Update!)
If you’re potty training a boy, this little gadget might be your best friend. The ONEDONE Portable Urinal is basically a discreet pee bottle that holds up to 17 oz, comes with a cleaning brush, and is designed specifically for boys.
Why I love it:
- Compact and easy to store in the car, stroller basket, or diaper bag.
- A lifesaver on road trips, camping, or places without a clean bathroom.
- Quick to use, no setup required, and easy to clean.
This has been especially helpful in those “we’re stuck in traffic” moments or when my toddler suddenly declares he has to go right now. It’s one of those items you don’t think you’ll need until you do — and then you’ll be so glad you have it.
A Few Bonus Tips I’ve Picked Up
These aren’t must-haves, but they’ve been very handy since crossing into potty trained territory:
- Extra clothes in the car — accidents happen, even after they’re “trained.”
- Puppy potty pads under the car seat — Perfect in the beginning, they’re discreet and make cleanup so much easier if there’s an accident during a drive.
- Patience — lots and lots of patience (and maybe a coffee for you).
If you’re in the middle of potty training or just entering the “now we leave the house in underwear” phase, you’ve got this. It’s a messy, funny, and rewarding stage, and these must-haves have made it a whole lot smoother for us.
You’re doing a great job. xx, Ciara
