Protein-Packed Dirt Cups (15g Protein!)

I remember dirt cups vividly from childhood—the crushed cookies, the pudding, the gummy worms. They were such a fun treat! This high-protein version is my grown-up (and toddler-friendly) spin on the classic, with about 15g of protein per serving and way less sugar than the original.

As a mom of three, I’m always looking for creative ways to add more protein to the foods my kids already love. Some days it feels impossible to get enough protein into toddlers, right? That’s why I started experimenting with nostalgic snacks like dirt cups and giving them a nutritious upgrade.

Why I Love This Recipe

One of my biggest focuses—both for myself and my kids—is hitting our daily protein goals. Protein keeps everyone fuller, helps with energy, and is so important for growing little bodies.

The easiest way I’ve found to boost protein? A clean, whole-food protein powder. After a lot of trial and error, the one I always come back to is Just Ingredients (code CiaraBurgal saves you 10%). Their protein powders are made with real, whole-food ingredients, no fillers, dyes, gums, or artificial sweeteners. I feel confident giving it to my toddlers and love using it in recipes like this.

A few of my favorite flavors:

  • Chocolate (perfect for these dirt cups!)
  • Strawberries & Cream
  • French Vanilla
  • Vanilla Bean (note: it does have cinnamon, which surprised me at first, but I ended up loving it)

Another thing I appreciate? These proteins aren’t overly sweet. Maybe I’m just getting older, but I can’t do the syrupy-sweet powders anymore.

Of course, you can make this recipe without protein powder, but you’ll lose a lot of the protein boost (and probably end up with more sugar if you swap in pudding).

Ingredients for Protein Dirt Cups

  • Plain Greek Yogurt
  • 1 scoop Just Ingredients Chocolate Protein
  • Trader Joe’s Joe-Joes or Simple Mills Brownie Thins (for a gluten-free option)
  • Smart Sweets or Black Forest gummy worms

How to Make High-Protein Dirt Cups

  1. In a bowl, stir together one serving of plain yogurt with one scoop of Just Ingredients Chocolate Protein until smooth.
  2. Divide into two cups.
  3. Crush 1–2 cookies or brownie thins and sprinkle on top.
  4. Add a gummy worm (optional but fun for kids!).
  5. Enjoy immediately!

Each cup has about 15g of protein, making this a snack that feels like dessert but actually helps fuel your family.

When to Serve

These dirt cups are such a fun afternoon snack or protein-packed dessert. They’re also a hit for playdates because kids get the classic “dirt cup” experience but with a healthier twist.

And between you and me? I love them just as much as my kids—sometimes without the gummy worm.

Halloween Twist 🎃

Want to make these dirt cups festive for spooky season? Try these easy swaps and toppings:

  • Add candy eyeballs on top for a “monster in the dirt” look.
  • Stick in a cookie or graham cracker as a “tombstone.”
  • Use gummy spiders, bats, or pumpkins instead of worms.
  • Sprinkle on orange and black sprinkles for a simple seasonal touch.
  • Serve in mini clear cups for kids’ Halloween parties or playdates.

These little changes make your healthy dirt cups feel like a Halloween party snack—without all the extra sugar.
