The Truth of Toddler Activities

just an average mom who tries her best. featuring toddler activities and the realities of motherhood

Here are SIX things I learned when I first started trying to do less screen time with my toddler and incorporate more activities.

Toddler Color Match Activity for less screen time.
  1. It doesn’t have to be complicated.
Most of the activities I do with my toddler use the same 5-10 things that are always around the house. I think from the start of these activities I’ve only really purchased pom-poms, pipettes, construction paper, and paint – and we use these for so many different activities.
  2. Give it time.
The more I did these activities, the more into my toddler was. Initially when we starting cutting down our screen time and replacing it with simple activities, my toddler didn’t always have the longest interest in doing them. After a few days of continuing these simple activities, she started to get more and more excited and participate in the activities longer.
  3. Let your toddler explore.
You planned this whole activity and your toddler decides to take it a whole different route.. LET THEM. Sometimes our mama hearts have the urge to step in when we don’t really need to. As long as my toddler is entertained and safe – I let it happen.
  4. It doesn’t have to be messy.
Sure, there are a ton of messy activities out there that your toddler will likely love. But, if you aren’t feeling a messy activity – don’t do one. There are plenty of activities that will keep your toddler entertained and leave a limited mess (for some ideas – check out my mess-less activities post).
  5. It won’t always be a success… and that’s okay!
Some days my toddler has no interest in whatever activity I am trying to set up for her. Other days my toddler is begging for an activity (something cool – as she calls it).
  6. It’s okay to repeat!
Every day doesn’t have to be a new activity. You can repeat or slightly change activities and still have fun. My toddler LOVES hide-and-seek shapes and this is one that’s easy to switch up. The last time we did it, I let my toddler pick the eight shapes/items I drew.

In case no one has told you lately, you’re doing a great job mama. xx Ciara
