Toys I Would Buy Again (and Again!)

If you’re new here… hi! I’m a mom of three (ages 4, 2, and 10 months) doing my best to run a low-screen household and find toys, games, and activities that actually keep my kids entertained for more than five minutes.

With Christmas around the corner, I know many of us are in gift-buying mode. So I wanted to round up the toys that have truly stood the test of time in our home, the ones my kids play with again and again, and the ones I’d happily buy a second (or third) time.

These are our tried-and-true toys that encourage creativity, independent play, and skill building — without relying on screens. Most of them are toddler and preschool-friendly, and many are baby-safe too, which is key when you have little ones playing side-by-side.

What I Look for in Toys

I tend to gravitate toward toys that:

  • Keep my kids engaged for long stretches of time
  • Encourage creativity, imagination, or movement
  • Are durable enough to last through multiple kids
  • Don’t require me to hover constantly

I’ll admit, the toys that make the biggest mess are often the ones that entertain them the longest. So some days we embrace the chaos for the sake of quiet playtime (and happy kids).

Here are the toys that have been worth every penny for us.

Our Most-Loved Toys

1. Little Tikes Story Dream Machine

A total favorite in our house. This little projector reads stories out loud, plays sound effects, and projects the images onto the ceiling or wall. Once my 4-year-old figured out how to swap the story reels, she and my 2-year-old started using it completely independently.

They’ll go upstairs, turn off the lights, and watch stories together for 30+ minutes, which, if you’re a parent, you know is practically a miracle.

It runs on batteries, but we’ve had ours for a full year before needing replacements. I love that family members can gift new story books for it instead of adding more bulky toys to the mix.

2. Yoto Player or Yoto Mini

We have both and love them for different reasons! The Yoto Player has a larger screen and lives in our playroom, while the Yoto Mini is perfect for travel or car rides.

They play stories, songs, and educational content through collectible cards and yes, family can gift new cards for birthdays or holidays! My kids use them with the built-in speakers (you can also use headphones), and they charge via USB-C, which makes things simple.

3. Busy Beams Balance Sets

If you’re looking for something that encourages movement and imagination, these are a must. We have all three versions, the rainbow beams, the B. Toys balance set with stepping stones, and the newer light-up version that plays games like “freeze.”

The kids love building obstacle courses, creating balance challenges, or setting up races. These have lasted over a year and still get played with multiple times a week, indoors and outdoors.

4. Little Tikes Chef Kits

These are my rainy day heroes. They’re like a mess-free, sand-based sensory kit with a fun cooking twist. We’ve tried several: cupcakes, Bluey pavlova, ice cream, and I already grabbed the Christmas cookie one for this year!

They range from $10–$25 and are worth every penny for how long they keep my kids occupied. I store the play sand after the first day, and the kids keep using the accessories in their play kitchen. You can always restock the sand or swap in Play-Doh to extend the fun.

5. Little People Sets

These are especially loved by my 2-year-old. We have everything from construction vehicles to the fire truck and farm sets. They’re great for imaginative play and mix perfectly with other toys.

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly add-on, Walmart has a great construction truck set for under $10 that’s been a big hit.

6. Magna-Tiles

A forever favorite in our home! Every single year, my kids get better at building, and the Magna-Tile sets just keep getting cooler. What started as mosaic flat lays turned into simple towers and houses now has turned into elaborate cities, zoos, and even “parking garages” for toy cars.

They’re one of those toys that truly grow with your kids, my 2-year-old loves stacking and sorting them by color, while my 4-year-old creates imaginative worlds and experiments with symmetry and balance. It’s such a sneaky way for them to build fine motor skills, spatial reasoning, and early STEM concepts through play.

Our current favorites are the Fire Station and Animal sets. I love that Magna-Tiles are super durable and easy to store in a simple bin. Plus, they mix and match across sets, so you can slowly build your collection over time instead of buying everything at once.

If you’re looking for a toy that lasts for years, sparks creativity, and keeps siblings playing together, Magna-Tiles are 100% worth it.

7. Battat Play Couch

Okay, technically not a toy, but my kids are obsessed. We have the new construction-themed Battat couch, and it’s perfect for fort building, imaginative play, and car setups (it even has a printed road map on the cushions!).

They’ll stack the pieces, build ramps, and use the cones for “construction zones.” This one gets used daily and the first version we have has held up really well. It now lives upstairs as our back up “kid couch.”

8. Kinetic Sand Kits

Like the Chef Kits, these are perfect for long, quiet play sessions. We love the themed sets (construction, ice cream, treasure hunt), and they store easily for next time. I usually set them up in a large tray to contain the mess.

9. Water Table

If you’ve never used one before, a water table is basically a raised play table you fill with water for endless splashing, pouring, scooping, and sensory fun. It’s one of those classic toys that somehow never gets old and honestly, it’s been one of our best warm-weather investments.

We currently have this one and it’s been such a hit. I’ll set it up with cups, sponges, and even pair it with the Skillmatics Gem Dive game to make it more interactive. My kids will play for hours, scooping, pouring, pretending to “wash cars,” and making up little games together. It’s also one of the few toys that keeps all three of my kids happily playing side by side (which feels like a small miracle).

When we lived in an apartment, we had an easy store version that folded up for our balcony, and it was perfect for smaller spaces. Next summer, I’ve got my eye on the Step2 Car Wash Water Table, it looks so fun and would be such a great upgrade now that the kids are a little older.

Water tables are amazing for imaginative play, sensory exploration, and outdoor sunshine time. Sometimes we’ll even add wet/dry kinetic sand to the mix for a whole new sensory texture, it’s a little messy, but the combo keeps them so engaged that it’s completely worth it.

If you’re looking for a toy that works for toddlers, preschoolers, and siblings together, a water table is a must-have, simple setup, easy cleanup, and endless play possibilities.

Smaller Toys I’d Still Buy Again

Glo Pals

Perfect for bath time. These light-up cubes make the bath instantly more fun. Add some bubble foam and cups for pouring, and you’ve got yourself 20 minutes of happy, splashing toddlers.

Mini Magna-Tiles

These come in a metal tin, and my kids love building right on top of it. Ideal for travel, restaurants, or quiet time on the go.

Craft Kits & Supplies We Love

Skillmatics Foil Fun

An absolute hit. These kits come with so many supplies and keep my 4-year-old busy for ages. I love that they offer both seasonal and everyday themes (like unicorns). We’ve tried several Skillmatics kits and honestly, this one’s our favorite so far.

Final Thoughts

If you’re shopping for Christmas gifts or looking to refresh your playroom with toys that truly get used, these are the ones I’d buy again in a heartbeat. I’ll keep adding to the list as my kids get older.

They’ve survived multiple ages, stages, and spills and most importantly, they’ve given my kids hours of creative, screen-free play.

If you try any of these, tag me on Instagram. I’d love to see your little ones playing with them! If you’re looking for more easy fun to keep your kids entertained check out these fun activities and crafts my kids love:
