If you know me, you know I am a slippers everywhere kind of mom. Whether I’m walking the dogs, grabbing the mail, or chasing my kids around the yard, my slippers go where I go. Which is exactly why I had to find a way to waterproof them because there is nothing worse than that dreaded water line on your Uggs.
This simple hack has saved so many pairs of shoes in my house, my own Ugg dupes, my kids’ boots, and even my husband’s sneakers. It’s easy, affordable, and takes less than 10 minutes of hands-on time.

Why Waterproofing Is a Must
If you live in a wet or snowy climate (or you’re just a mom who wears slippers outside), waterproofing is a game-changer. It helps:
- Prevent stains and water marks on suede or fabric shoes.
- Extend the life of your footwear.
- Keep your feet warmer and dryer, especially in winter.
- Make clean-up easier when shoes get muddy or dusty.

My Ugg Dupe Story (And Why I Switched)
Last season, I splurged on the real Ugg Tasman slippers… and sadly, they didn’t hold up as well as I hoped. This year, I decided to try these Ugg slipper dupes and wow, they’re comfy, cute, and way easier on the wallet. So even if I have to buy them every season, at least I’m saving!
The only thing missing was waterproofing.
Since I’m team “slippers outside” (especially for quick trips with the kids), I knew I had to treat them right away. This hack is also perfect for kids’ Uggs or boots, especially if they insist on jumping in puddles.
What You’ll Need
- Your slippers or boots – My favorite Ugg dupes here.
- Kiwi Suede & Nubuck Waterproofer Spray
- 24–48 hours of drying time.
Step-by-Step Waterproofing Instructions
1. Start with clean shoes
If your shoes are brand new, you’re good to go. If they’ve been worn, give them a quick clean. A suede brush or a slightly damp cloth works well. The spray works best on a dirt-free surface.
2. Spray evenly
Hold the Kiwi spray about 6–8 inches from your shoes and coat them evenly. Pay extra attention to the seams, that’s where water tends to sneak in.
3. Don’t panic if they look darker
Right after spraying, the color of your shoes will deepen. Totally normal! They’ll lighten back up as they dry.
4. Let them dry
Allow the first coat to dry. Then, repeat the process. I usually do 2–4 coats depending on how often the shoes will see rain or snow.
5. Give them a full day to cure
After your last coat, let the shoes dry for 24 hours before wearing them.

How to Test Your Waterproofing
Once dry, sprinkle or pour a little water on your shoes. You should see the water bead up and roll right off. If it soaks in at all, add another coat.
How Often to Reapply
Waterproofing isn’t forever. Depending on how often your shoes are exposed to moisture, reapply every 6–12 months. I usually refresh mine at the start of fall and again in mid-winter.
Final Thought
This is hands-down one of my favorite affordable hacks for keeping shoes looking brand new. It works for slippers, boots, sneakers, and even kids’ school shoes. Once you try it, you’ll never go back to unprotected suede!
And there you have it, the easiest, most affordable way to waterproof your Uggs, slippers, and boots! Whether you’re running after kids, walking the dogs, or braving rainy days, your shoes will thank you.
