Our Honest Yoto Player Review After Using It With Our Toddler

We were recently gifted a Yoto Player for our 3-year-old, and I wanted to share everything we’ve liked, and the few things we haven’t, after using it regularly. If you’re wondering if it’s worth it, especially compared to a Toniebox, here’s our honest review so far.

If you’re in the research phase like I was, trying to decide between a Yoto Player and a Toniebox, this post is specifically about our experience with the Yoto brand, we don’t own a Toniebox, so I can’t compare directly!

What We Have in Our Yoto Setup:

Here’s everything we have on Amazon!

What We Love About the Yoto Player:

Honestly, I wish we had gotten one sooner. It’s simple enough for my 3-year-old to use on her own, and the way she’s taken to it makes me excited to get a second one for my son when he’s around 2½.

Easy Setup

You’ll need to download the Yoto app and connect the player to WiFi initially. Once that’s done, you can start uploading and downloading your cards.

Note: You do need WiFi the first time you use each card so it can download to the device. After that, you’re good to go offline.

Great for Travel

Once your cards are downloaded, you don’t need WiFi to play them—making the Yoto perfect for travel. We use the Yoto Mini on the go, but you could bring either one.

Cool feature: If you have more than one Yoto Player (like we do), and they’re connected to the same app account, a card only needs to be downloaded once. It’ll then play on both players—and even keep your place!

Card Saves Your Place

This is one of my favorite features: the player remembers where your child left off on a card. If they pause it or take it out, it picks up right where they left off—even if it’s inserted into a different Yoto device on your account.

Long Battery Life

The Yoto Player has around 24 hours of playtime on a full charge. It also auto-sleeps when not in use, which helps conserve battery.

Extra Features We Didn’t Expect to Love:

  • Nightlight, alarm clock, and sound machine modes
  • Daily weather, date, and kid-friendly facts
  • Yoto Radio and family playlists without a card
  • Make-your-own cards (upload your own content—so cool for personalized stories or music)
  • Drawing prompts that walk your child through how to draw something

Yoto Player vs Yoto Mini: Which Should You Get?

If you’re choosing between the Yoto Player (Original) and the Yoto Mini, here’s my personal take:

  • Yoto Mini is perfect for travel or older kids. It’s more portable, but doesn’t have as big of a pixel display or nightlight.
  • Yoto Player (Original) is ideal for younger toddlers. It’s bigger, sturdier, and has that fun, large pixel display that shows images related to the card’s content.

If I had to pick just one for a younger toddler, I’d go with the Original Yoto Player. But now that we have both, I love that we can use either one without losing our place in the story.

A Few Downsides:

  • You need WiFi the first time you use each new card (I think this is true for Tonies too)
  • You must physically insert the card to play it on the device (though you can play the audio from your phone via the app).

These aren’t dealbreakers for us, but they’re worth knowing up front.

Final Thoughts: Would We Recommend It?

Absolutely. I love that the Yoto Player grows with your child, from toddlerhood through the elementary years. With newer card releases like Narnia and Magic Treehouse, it’s not just a toddler gadget. It has serious staying power.

We use it daily, whether for bedtime stories, quiet time, or road trips. It’s been a great screen-free tool that still feels exciting and engaging for my kids.

Have questions? Send me a message or comment anytime, I’m happy to share more about how we use it or which cards have been our favorites.
