If you’re new here, welcome! I started sharing toddler activities back when my oldest was 2 and we had just welcomed a new baby into the family. I’m not completely anti-screens, but I realized I was leaning on them more than I wanted to. So I started setting up easy (emphasis on easy) activities during one of the baby’s naps to keep my toddler engaged.
She absolutely loved having something special just for her and it gave me a few minutes of guilt-free rest in the middle of a long day.
Fast forward to now: I’m a mom of three, and my focus has shifted to creating simple, fun activities that both my 2-year-old and 4-year-old can enjoy, especially during times when I need to care for the baby or just enjoy my coffee while it’s still warm.
If you have a set of MAGNA-TILES, you’re going to love these five ideas. They’re low-prep, fun, and can easily be adapted for toddlers, preschoolers, or even early elementary kids.
1. Color Sort on the Garage Door

Yes, your garage door is magnetic! For this one, bring your Magna-Tiles outside and tape up large color blocks using colored painter’s tape. Then let your kids sort the tiles by color. It’s a great activity for color recognition and gross motor play.
Tip: This also works on the side of the fridge or a magnetic easel indoors!
2. Magna-Tile Puzzles

Using a chalk marker or dry-erase pen, draw a simple seasonal image across connected Magna-Tiles—a pumpkin, leaf, apple, or even a Christmas tree depending on the season. Mix up the pieces and let your child try to reassemble the picture like a puzzle.
Perfect for encouraging visual-spatial reasoning and problem-solving skills.
3. Magna-Tile Bowling

Set up Magna-Tiles as targets, towers, or open box shapes. Give your kids a small ball and have them roll it to knock down the tiles. It’s like bowling, but with magnets!
No scorekeeping needed, just good old-fashioned fun and a little practice with coordination and aim.
4. Magna-Tile Matching Game

Draw two matching symbols or concepts on separate tiles using a chalk pen:
- For toddlers: shapes or simple pictures (like sun and moon)
- For preschoolers: uppercase + lowercase letters, numbers + dot quantities
- For older kids: basic math facts, rhyming pairs, or sight words
This is a great way to sneak in early learning skills in a hands-on, playful way.
5. Magna-Tile Coding Challenge
Create a 4×4 grid on an index card or half sheet of paper. Fill each square with a color pattern using the Magna-Tile shades. Ask your child to recreate the pattern using their tiles.
For older kids: Leave a few boxes blank and challenge them to “crack the code” by finishing the pattern.
Bonus Tip: Place the completed answer key on the back so they can self-check.
This activity builds pattern recognition, logic, and early coding skills.
Why We Love Magna-Tile Play
Of course, Magna-Tiles are perfect for building towers and castles, but they’re also a great tool for open-ended learning. These five activities are just a fun way to add variety to your play routine while supporting your child’s development through STEM-based and creative play.
