Looking for a fun, low-prep Halloween activity for your toddler? This DIY Halloween Puzzle is a great way to combine creativity, fine motor practice, and seasonal fun, using materials you probably already have at home!
Why We Love This Puzzle
This puzzle is perfect for toddlers because:
- It helps build fine motor skills
- Supports color recognition
- Can be reused again and again
- It’s super easy to customize for any holiday, theme, or interest!
We made a ghost and a jack-o-lantern for Halloween, but you could easily make a Christmas tree in December or a heart for Valentine’s Day.
Heads up: the painted Q-tips do need time to dry, so this is a great activity to prep the night before!
What You’ll Need
- 1 empty cardboard box (shipping boxes work great!)
- Butcher paper (optional, but makes decorating easier)
- Q-tips (cut in half)
- Paint, food coloring, or markers
- A small screwdriver or similar tool (for poking holes)
How to Make Your DIY Puzzle
1. Choose your design
Decide what picture you want to create. For Halloween, we made a simple ghost and jack-o-lantern. Think about what colors you’ll need for your design.

2. Color the Q-tips
You have a few options here:
- Mix paint and water in small cups (my favorite for bold colors)
- Use food coloring and water
- Or simply color each Q-tip with a marker
Once dyed, lay the Q-tips out on a tray or paper towel to dry for a few hours or overnight.

3. Decorate your box
You can draw your design directly on the box, but I like to wrap the box in white butcher paper first. It makes your design pop and is easier to draw on.
Sketch your picture onto the box using simple shapes.

4. Create the puzzle holes
Use a small screwdriver or a similar tool to carefully poke holes around the outline of your design. These will be where your toddler inserts the Q-tips to “complete” the puzzle.

How to Play
Give your toddler the colored Q-tips and encourage them to match the correct colors to the holes on the box. It’s simple but keeps them engaged!
You can:
- Add colors one section at a time
- Talk about the holiday theme as you play
- Save the puzzle to play with again (just store the Q-tips in a little bag!)
Want to take it a step further? You can draw a different picture on each side of the box to rotate through throughout the season.
Make It Your Own
The best part? You can adjust this activity to match:
- Your toddler’s favorite animals or characters
- Any upcoming holiday or event
- Different skill levels (more or fewer colors, closer or wider holes)
