5 Screen-Free Toys and Activities My Kids Are Loving Right Now

I’m always on the lookout for fun, screen-free toys and activities that can keep my kids entertained for a good stretch of time. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against screens, but I’ve noticed my kids behave better and play more independently on the days we hold off on TV or tablets.

Some days I love setting up a DIY activity, but other days it’s nice to have a toy or activity on hand that’s ready to go. Here are five of my kids’ current favorites, all of which encourage independent play while sneaking in some learning.

1. Rainbow Sudoku

This gem comes from a small business and is honestly one of the coolest ideas I’ve seen. When you order it, you get:

  • A bag of rainbow cubes
  • A board with 81 spots
  • Several laminated cards with pictures for your toddler to recreate

I usually start my toddler with the cards that have every space filled, then gradually let her try more challenging patterns. My 4-year-old’s favorites are the butterfly and flower designs—she’ll happily do them every time.

I personally love bringing this activity out when my 2-year-old is napping. It’s perfect for independent play and helps with color recognition, pattern matching, and fine motor skills.

Shop it here.

2. Skillmatics Rainbow Sort

This is a winner because both my 2-year-old and 4-year-old can play with it easily. The set includes:

  • Silicone shapes
  • Tongs
  • Cups
  • Cards with different sorting challenges

They can sort colors with the tongs into cups, organize shapes using the cards, and more. It’s a fantastic way to introduce fine motor skills, shape recognition, and color sorting for toddlers and preschoolers.

3. B. Toys Light Box

The light box is another favorite for both my kids. My 2-year-old enjoys watching the light shine through, while my 4-year-old uses the projection sheets and tiles to create pictures (she’s been doing this since she was 3!).

It’s great for:

  • Color recognition
  • Shape recognition
  • Early number skills

We also like combining it with our magnet tiles—the light shining through them adds a whole new layer of play. It’s an easy 30 minutes of independent fun.

4. Tracks Floor Puzzle

Melissa and Doug’s Tracks Floor Puzzle is perfect for older toddlers and preschoolers. The puzzle itself measures about 3 feet by 2 feet, and it comes with wind-up cars that fit into the grooves on the track.

My kids can spend over an hour putting the puzzle together, then racing the cars along the tracks repeatedly. It’s excellent for:

  • Problem-solving
  • Fine motor skills
  • Spatial awareness

5. Little Tikes Creative Chef Sand Kits

These kits are a little messy, but wow—they keep my kids entertained for ages. We’ve tried:

The kits come with no-dry sand, so the fun doesn’t have to stop. After play, the pieces can also double as props for your play kitchen or other sand activities. I personally find clean-up easier than with Play-Doh.

There are a few more to try.

This is a great option for sensory play, imaginative play, and hands-on creativity.

All of these toys are perfect for rainy days or anytime you want to encourage independent play without turning on the TV.
