This mom hack is one of my absolute favorites at Christmas time, especially on those long December days when you want to wrap presents or drink your coffee while it is still hot. I have always loved turning on fake fireplace and Christmas music videos on YouTube to create a cozy, festive atmosphere in our home. It instantly makes everything feel calmer and more magical.
Then I discovered that YouTube has similar videos made specifically for kids, and I could not resist. There are so many gentle, kid friendly Christmas videos that feel festive without being overstimulating. Think slow moving animations, cozy holiday scenes, and soft Christmas music that keeps little ones engaged while still feeling peaceful. This has become one of my go to tools during the holidays when I need a few uninterrupted minutes to wrap gifts, reset the kitchen, or simply sit and enjoy a quiet moment.
I usually save a few of these videos to a playlist ahead of time so I am not scrambling to find something when I need it. I turn the volume down low, set them up on the couch with a small snack, and let them watch together while I get a few things done. It feels special and festive for them and gives me a calm, low stress break.
I will link a few of our favorite kid friendly Christmas videos at the bottom, but you can also search YouTube for your own favorites. There are tons of options depending on what your kids enjoy, from winter animals to simple holiday animations to cozy Christmas scenes.
Christmas and Indoor Activities
When I am feeling more hands on, or when my kids are in the mood for activities, we lean into our 25 Days of Christmas Activities. This list is a mix of simple activities they can do mostly on their own and others that we do together, which makes it easy to choose what works for the day. Some days I have the energy to sit and craft alongside them, and other days I need something that keeps them busy while I fold laundry or cook dinner.
On days when the weather keeps us inside, I also have a full blog post with indoor activities that will keep your toddler or preschooler entertained on rainy or cold days. These are low prep, realistic activities that work for real life and real attention spans.
Keepsakes and Gifts
We also love making keepsake gifts every Christmas, both for myself and for the grandparents. It has become one of my favorite traditions. This year we made resin photo ornaments, which turned out so special. In past years we have made mistletoes using footprints and handprint mugs that are still some of my favorite things to pull out each holiday season. These keepsakes always end up meaning more than store bought gifts and are such a sweet way to capture this season of life.
If you are looking to limit screens or balance them with more open ended play, I also share a list of screen free toys we genuinely love and use in our home (and I have this list of toys I’d buy again, and again). These are toys my kids play with regularly at ages 2.5 and 4.5, and many of them come out even more during the winter months when we are home more.
I try to approach the holidays with a mix of cozy, independent moments and meaningful activities we do together. Some days call for crafts and keepsakes, and other days call for simple mom hacks that help the season feel joyful without feeling overwhelming.
At the end of the day, the magic of this season is not found in perfectly planned activities or Pinterest worthy moments. It is found in the small, quiet traditions, the cozy days at home, and the love we pour into our families. If some days that looks like crafts and keepsakes, and other days it looks like a warm drink and a calm moment to breathe, that is more than enough. You are creating the magic, even on the days it feels simple. Give yourself grace. You are doing a really great job. xx, Ciara
