Thanksgiving week is here, which means lots of cooking, cleaning, and hosting prep. If you’re like me, you’re looking for simple ways to keep your kids entertained while you chop vegetables, stir the gravy, or maybe just enjoy a quiet cup of coffee.

But here’s the catch—I don’t want to rely on endless screen time, and I definitely don’t want to buy more little toys when Christmas is right around the corner.

That’s where this easy turkey craft for toddlers and preschoolers comes in. It’s budget-friendly, keeps little hands busy, and the finished product makes the cutest Thanksgiving table decoration. Best of all, this activity works for kids of all ages with just a few small tweaks. My 2-year-old and 4-year-old both loved it, and I was surprised at how little mess we ended up with!

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • Cardstock
  • Tissue paper in assorted colors
  • White glue
  • Toilet paper or paper towel rolls (2-3 per turkey)
  • Brown construction paper (or just use a marker if you don’t have any)
  • Scissors

Step 1: Prep the Turkey Body

  • Cut your toilet paper or paper towel rolls into 1-inch pieces. I used about three toilet paper rolls per turkey, but you can adjust based on what you have.
  • On your cardstock, cut out a peanut-shaped oval for the turkey’s body and glue it down.
  • Draw a simple turkey beak and eyes. (Googly eyes would be so fun if you have some on hand!)

Step 2: Build the Feathers

  • Glue the toilet paper roll pieces around the turkey’s body to create the feathers.
  • Let the glue dry for a few hours before moving on, this step helps keep everything sturdy for little hands.

Step 3: Add the Color and Texture

  • To make this more than just a craft, I turned it into a color recognition activity. Inside each paper roll “feather,” I drew a colored line that matched the tissue paper.
  • Cut the tissue paper into quarters.
  • Pour glue into a dish or tray, and let your toddlers crumple the tissue squares, dip them in glue, and stick them inside the rolls.

This part kept both of my kids happily focused for about 20 minutes. They loved seeing the turkey feathers fill in with color, and I loved sipping my coffee in peace.

The Finished Craft

Once they’re done, you’ll have the cutest little turkeys to display for Thanksgiving dinner.

And the best part? It’s practically mess-free and super affordable.

Why I Love This Activity

  • Works for multiple ages (toddlers through elementary)
  • Encourages fine motor skills and color recognition
  • Budget-friendly (you’re mostly using what you already have at home)
  • Pretty enough to display

My 2-year-old picked it up so quickly, and my 4-year-old really got into choosing colors and filling in the feathers. It’s definitely going in our Thanksgiving activity rotation every year.
