A Construction Truck Advent Calendar: The December Activity That Keeps on Giving

My toddler is deep in the truck phase right now, and honestly, I don’t think I ever want it to end. His big sister is more than happy to join in, so when I spotted this CAT Construction Truck Advent Calendar, I immediately knew it could be the perfect December activity that would last all month long.

This advent calendar comes with 10 mini construction trucks plus plenty of extras like cones, signs, and even little boulders. The last day includes a small bag of sand, but I had an even better idea… adding fake snow to turn it into a winter construction zone.

We set everything up in one of our sensory trays (though a cake tin or baking dish would work just fine), made the fake snow together, and got started. The kids loved the snow alone, so honestly you could kick things off on December 1 with just that and they’d be thrilled.

How It Works

Every morning, your toddler gets to open the next day of the advent calendar and add a new truck or construction piece to their snowy scene. My kids get so excited for the daily reveal, and then it’s like brand-new playtime all over again. They immediately start creating new stories, plowing through snow piles, and digging roads.

For me, this means at least an hour of peaceful play in the morning while I enjoy my coffee (or wrap a few presents). And since the advent calendar is under $25 and the snow is less than $10, it’s a really budget-friendly way to keep them entertained all month long.

You could even pair this with another advent calendar or toy set. I’ve got my eye on the Little People Frozen Kit to add some wintery characters to our snowy construction site.

How to Set It Up

  • Step 1: Choose your sensory base. We used fake snow, but kinetic sand would also work well.
  • Step 2: Set it up in a sensory tray, baking dish, or cake tin to keep the mess contained.
  • Step 3: Cut off the fold-down road map included in the advent calendar box so your kids can drive their trucks through a construction “town.”
  • Step 4: Each morning, let your kids open that day’s surprise and add it to the scene.

By the end of the first week, your kids will have plenty of trucks and accessories to create elaborate snowy construction jobs.

Extra Play Ideas

  • Assign your kids “construction jobs” like plowing roads, hauling boulders, or building snowy piles.
  • Add holiday touches. Think, mini Christmas trees, tiny ornaments, or jingle bells from the dollar section at Target or even Hobby Lobby to make it extra festive.
  • If you live somewhere snowy, bring the trucks outside and let your kids try real snow construction!

Why Parents Will Love It

  • Independent play time: This has quickly become one of my favorite activities because my kids stay entertained while I can catch a breath, drink my coffee, or get some holiday tasks done.
  • Simple cleanup: The snow stays mostly in the bin (and even with a very enthusiastic toddler, it’s easy to tidy up).
  • Screen-free fun: It’s a hands-on, sensory-rich way to make the Christmas countdown magical without relying on sugar or clutter.

As much as I love doing crafts with my kids, this advent calendar setup is the perfect balance of festive and independent play.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a December activity that keeps on giving, I can’t recommend this Construction Truck Advent Calendar + Fake Snow combo enough. It’s simple, affordable, and full of holiday magic.
